Adding Editable Polygon Layers

You can add and modify polygons on the Spatial Explorer map by adding an editable polygon layer and then creating new polygons on this layer. You can add multiple polygon layers to the Spatial Explorer map, with each layer containing as many polygons as you need. You can format each polygon individually, including line color, weight, and style, fill color, and fill pattern.

You can add as many polygons on a polygon layer as you want, and you can have multiple polygon layers.

The polygon toolbar

The polygon toolbar becomes available when you make an editable polygon layer the active layer. Use the polygon toolbar to create and edit polygons and arrows on a polygon layer.

Creating Polygons

Draw a rectangle. Press and hold the Shift key to draw a square.

Draw a circle. Press and hold the Shift key to draw an ellipse.

Digitize a new polygon by points. Double-click to finish drawing the polygon.

Editing Polygons

Edit Mode

Edit mode. This must be selected to add or edit polygons on a polygon layer.

Cancel editing mode. This closes the polygon toolbar.

Change polygon appearance. Modify the line weight, color, and style, as well as the fill color and lithology fill pattern, size, and color.

Edit polygon vertices. Click and drag one or more vertices on a polygon to change the shape of the polygon. This option is available on all polygons, including circles and ellipses. You can also resize and rotate polygons.

Edit polygon vertex by XY. Move individual vertices on a polygon by specifying new XY coordinates for one or more vertices. You can also insert new points as well as rename the polygon.

Move and resize polygon. Click and drag polygon to a new location, then click again to leave the polygon in the new location.

Polygon attributes

When you create polygons on an editable polygon layer, Spatial Explorer saves several attributes about each polygon. This includes the area of the polygon in hectares, acres, square feet, square meters, square miles, and square kilometers as well as the perimeter length in feet and miles. Use the data selection tools to display these polygon attributes.

Saving data to Kingdom

You can use polygons you draw on a polygon layer to save data to Kingdom. You can save one or more polygons to a shape file or to a Kingdom polygon for display on the Kingdom basemap. You can create a new editable polygon layer that contains only the polygons you selected. You can also create a well query or spatial query from selected polygons, as well as a buffer layer. For more information about saving data to kingdom, see Selecting and Saving Data.

Your can also perform polygon computations. For more information about polygon computations, see Polygon Computations (Kingdom only).
