Bubble Map tab
Use the Bubble Map tab to display one or more borehole attributes on the Spatial Explorer map as a bubble, pie chart, or donut around the well symbol. In bubble maps, the bubble, pie chart, or donut indicates both the presence of a selected attribute as well as attribute values.
Bubble display settings
You can define a number of display settings for well bubble maps. These settings include the following:
- Fixed Radius — you can choose between a specific size in inches / cm (for a printed map), or map units (scale used to measure distance on the map).
- Scaled Radius — the size of the bubble is a function of the attribute value relative to a scale value you enter here. A larger scale value results in a smaller radius, and vice versa. For example, if you have selected an attribute for oil production volume, typing the value 1000 in this field means that every 1000 bbls of oil production results in 1 cm of radius length for the bubble.
- Scaled Area — like scaled radius, the size of the bubble is a function of the attribute value relative to a scale value you enter here. However, the size of the bubble is determined by area, not by length. A larger scale value results in a smaller bubble, and vice versa.
- Map Scaled Area — the size of the bubble is a function of the attribute value relative to the map display scale, so that the bubble size increases as you zoom in on the map and decreases as you zoom out.
- Size by — when selecting a scaled size (either radius or area), you can scale by the value of the first attribute in the Selected Data pane or by the sum of values for all attributes in the Selected Data pane. You can click and drag items in this pane to change which attribute is first.
- Divide by — the size of the attribute bubble is scaled up or down based on the value you enter here. This is similar to Scaled Radius, but the result is relative only to the value of the attribute without any scale of measurement for distance. A larger value results in a smaller bubble, and vice versa. This option works in addition to any scaled size setting you select.
- Max Radius — select this option to force a maximum size for bubbles on the map. Any bubble smaller than the value defined here is shown at the calculated size. Any bubble larger than the value defined here is restricted to the maximum radius.
- Opacity — you can set this between 0 and 100.
- Draw Donut — draws a donut (has a transparent center) around the well symbol.
- Draw Outline — draws an outline for a complete bubble, pie chart, or donut (this option is useful for wells that do not have all the selected attributes).
- Show Count in Legend — shows the number of wells with the selected attribute in the map legend.
- Visibility — shows / hides the display of the bubble maps.
Defining color and value range
You can define different colors for each attribute, and you can also define a range of values for the selected attribute to display the presence of that attribute in the well only if it has attribute values within that range. You can also invert this range (by selecting NOT) to show the presence of the selected attribute only if values are outside the range you define. A histogram is available to help you select meaningful value ranges.
Selecting bubble map display settings
Follow these steps to define well attribute display settings on the map.
- Select the data type you want to display in the bubble map from the Data Types list. Depending on the data type you select, you may need to select additional options. You can select Attributes, Results, Wells, Zones, or others.
- Click the Add arrow to add your selection to the list of attributes selected for display in the Selected Data pane.
- Select a color to use for displaying the attribute on the map in the Color field.
- If needed, define a range of attribute values you want to include for display on the map, or invert this defined range by selecting Not. You can display the available histogram to help you select the correct range of data values.
- Choose the size of the pie chart you want to display on the map, based on radius or area or a fixed scale.
- If needed, specify a maximum radius for the bubbles on the map.
- Complete the remaining options as needed.
- To preview your selections, click Apply, or click OK to accept your selections and close the Display Properties window.
