Locating wells on a quarter section (Kingdom only)
After you have created a quarter section or sections on the Spatial Explorer map, you can use one or both to locate a new well. Locating a new well on a quarter section creates a new well in your project.
You can automatically snap a well to a grid location on a quarter section or you can manually place the well based on the quarter sections. The simplest method is to locate a well by snapping to a location on a quarter section grid, but you may need to manually locate a well to get the results you need.
Snapping to a location on the quarter section
Follow the steps below to create a new well by snapping to the quarter section grid. Keep in mind that you must already have your quarter section or sections drawn before you can place a new well.

- If it is not selected already, select the well layer where you want to create the new well.
- Choose the well creation method you want:
- If you want to create a new well by surface location only, select
on the Well Planning toolbar. Proceed to Step 3.
- If you want to create a new well by specifying both a surface and a bottomhole location, click
on the Well Planning toolbar. Proceed to Step 4.
- If you want to create a new well by surface location only, select
- Click on a grid intersection that is closest to the location where you want to place the surface location of the well. By default the cursor snaps to the quarter section grid. Press and hold the Control key (Ctrl) to disable grid snapping. Proceed to Step 5.
- Click on a grid intersection that is closest to the location where you want to place the surface location of the well, and then click again where you want to place the bottomhole location. By default the cursor snaps to the quarter section grid. Press and hold the Control key (Ctrl) to disable grid snapping.
- In the Create Well window, accept the default UWI or enter the actual well UWI (a required field) and any other information you want to provide for the well that you can enter here, and then click Next.
- Enter any other information you want to provide for the well, and then click Create Well. The symbol for the new well is displayed on the Spatial Explorer map along with the well plan (a two-point deviation survey) if you specified a bottomhole location.
Manually spotting a well by descriptive location
Spatial Explorer provides three different methods for spotting a well manually on a quarter section:
- Spotting a Location From Footages (Kingdom only)
- Spotting a Location From a Section Corner (Kingdom only)
- Spotting a Location From a Quarter Call (Kingdom only)
Click the links above for more information and instructions about how to spot wells using these manual methods.
